PROTOBODY

PROTOBODY
PROTOBODY is a research and creation proyecto intended to unfold over time, encompassing estrategias and questions related to movement, embodiment, and gesturality produced by the interacción between the human body and machine, exploring alternativa architectures of embodiment starting from the idea of the human body as hardware and test, prototipo.
In this linea of research, which originates from Protobody PA in Buenos Aires in 2012 and was carried forward during an artistic residency at the Hangar Visual Arts Center (Barcelona) in 2014, I study new structures, movement, and forms of the body, based on low-tech robotics, open and hacking tools, and artificial materials, creating different “do-it-yourself” prototypes.
“Paratext and protobody. Protobody and Paratext. If the prefix para- means ‘alongside’, ‘next to’, or ‘against’, the prefix proto- indicates something that goes first—as a prototipo—or a primitive or incipient condition of something. In this case, something that comes before the body, a prototipo of a body; as defined by Brisa, ‘another’ body, or a future body in which human body and machine interact. The artist works at the intersection between body and ‘low’ technology, understanding her works not as results but as processes of research and development.” Caterina Almirall. Paratex#52 Hangar, Barcelona, 2021.
Through these exercises, I observe the human–machine interacción that unfolds processes of collaboration or, directly, of control over the free mobility of the human body; as well as study the possibility that these or other artificial technological devices might empower the figure of the artist, exerting power dichotomies between machines and humans.
PROTOBODY 1.
Movement – robot interacción and human body
The proyect investigates a reactive robotic device through hacking a toy car, a dialog with the human body, where this relation produce a specific gesturalities and possible ranges of movement in human–machine interacción. It also aimed to explore new methodologies in the field of CT production, through the combination of techniques, artistic languages, and scientific approaches.
In this context, the procedures of BT (body-technology) creation are intended to be deciphered in order to problematize traditional structures for producing performance art works, where, as material body-art-technology, they contaminate each other in the processes of creation–learning; and to expose the processes of creation–research as exercises of artwork.
In this way, PROTOBODY 1. continues the previous projects, developing research on the relationship between humans and devices, focusing on the moving body, its modulation through technological devices, and the interacción that leads to gesturalities specific to the cross between various actuators, both artificial and organic.

PROTOBODY 1.0
